Sharing Ways We Save

So the things I did this week were all pretty simple but very effective.  I want to encourage you that even the small things add to your savings.  I have to remind even myself of this, because there are times when I feel like my efforts just aren't enough.

I had a failed attempt at making homemade vanilla yogurt.  It didn't set up properly but the taste was spot on.  I didn't know what to do with it, but I knew I did not want to throw it away.  We could not eat it in a bowl, but I believe God gave me some grace and the thought was born to use it for this

some tasty smoothies using blueberries we already had in the freezer.

We also went to our county fair and I shared some of the ways we saved money on this activity here

In the kitchen, we made our own spaghetti sauce, and banana bread.  We also had some strawberries that were about to be beyond use, so I quickly sliced them up, placed them in the refrigerator with sugar on top.  We used it to make our own style of strawberry short cake along with some other ingredients I already had on hand.

I almost forgot to mention we were also blessed this week with a big 13 gallon trash bag full of broccoli to feed to our chickens and pig.  I also had a few groceries given to me. Eggs were on sale at Walgreens for $.99.  (My husband spotted that deal)  I am super uper blessed!

We hunted down some free Easter fun at a local retirement community.  The kids played some simple but fun free games, and we got some free popsicles.

My husband and I had a date night at the local movie theater and only had to pay $12.00 to see a new movie (we may have later realized that it was because the clerk for some reason decided to give us a senior citizen's discount, stop laughing...I don't think we look that old)....so we had more than enough to spring for a soda and pop corn!

We also celebrated Jesus' Resurrection with our church family at a local park on Easter Sunday.  There was a big picnic and we got our exercise in playing some basketball while running around with friends.  There was so much food we even brought some home for dinner.

(as you can see not every moment is that perfectly frame-able one....my daughter was grumpy and I didn't get to hide my lumps and bumps behind anything but it's all part of embracing real life, and this is who I am right now, and grumpy or not...God had blessed me with a beautiful family.)

It was overall a great week.  We had a lot of fun and some fellowship this week.  How was your week?  I love to hear from you feel free to leave your thoughts, comments, and accomplishments!

  1. lol I was looking through some family photos and came across a set from a picnic we had years ago with the kids. Grumps, every one of them from the 20 year old to the 4 year old, lol. I'll keep the pictures to torture them with one day, lol. Love that you thought to do the smoothies with your yogurt. I've used my failed stuff as a sort of buttermilk too. I found that mine usually failed if I didn't sterilize my jars and lids. I wish my husband liked homemade. It's so good but he prefers the bought sort. I could make it in summer as a smoothie is a great treat to me with yogurt.

  2. What a great save on the yogurt! Wait a few years and you will love the imperfect photos better than the better ones because they remind you of life at that moment. We have one with Son1 about 2 1/2 and Son2 4 months The hub and I are each holding a crying child and we are both laughing. (It was a family event and one insisted on getting pictures of each individual family right at both kids nap times. We tried kindly to explain it just wasn't going to work for us, but she was adamant. Then she spent about 15 minutes trying to get everyone in the picture to look happy. We were just laughing at the absurdity of it and now it is one of my favorites of all times)

  3. Thank you ladies, I am sure you are both right about the family photos. Thank you for sharing your family memories with me as well. The yogurt does taste pretty good. Terri, can you sneak home made to your husband would he know the difference if you just served it to him and didn't say anything? My husband doesn't eat yogurt so we get to bypass what he does or doesn't like. Either way I hope you get to enjoy what you like. I hope both of you are having a great day!

    1. My husband has this idea that only store bought blueberry yogurt is yogurt. I tried to make blueberry but it was no bueno and he was not up for a second try. I think I will return to making my own for the warmer months which are longer than the cold ones here. And I think I'm going to use the method that calls for adding a spoonful or so of dry powdered milk into it.

  4. Ive never tried making homemade yogurt. I'm sure you will figure it out, I've heard it takes several attempts to get it like you want it when you first start. I'm not laughing at you but with you on getting senior citizen discount. At least you saved some money!

    1. True the savings left plenty of funds left over for that soda and popcorn we shared!

  5. lol... I had to laugh at the senior discount.. [hubby and I are at the senior discount age now..ha, but, when we were young... we were at a restraint, and the waitress ask if I was old enough and told Hubby she knew he didn't.. hahahah. Needless to say, he never let me live that down.ha]
Great use for your yogurt. Have a great day.

  6. I imagine my husband would have done the same thing and never let me live it down...it was funny when we realized what happened. That yogurt was so good in our smoothies...We just finished using it up this week. Do you make your own?
