Life Unscripted - Pulling out of No Spenduary

There is nothing like getting out of bed and realizing your dog has puked on your bed unbeknownst to you.  You have apparently laid in it, and now you need to wash the bed sheets and yourself...Yuck!

My daughter has what I suspect is some kind of viral rash or something but we have waited it out a few days, and prayed and there hasn't been any improvement for her.  It seems to be getting worse.  So we are going to the doctor this morning....I want confirmation that I shouldn't worry, and I am curious if there is any cream or something that could alleviate symptoms.  We did eventually make it to the doctor and she has fifths disease, which despite it's name is not a disease it is a virus....and once you reach the rash portion you aren't contagious anymore, but the doctor says the rash could last for up to two weeks.

There has been two deaths within about a week of each other in an extended branch of our family.  At this point, we are going to attempt to travel back to Delaware to show those that are hurting some love later this week.  So I am officially pulling out of the No Spenduary Challenge, it isn't going to be a month of saving much for us at this point.  Gas prices are the lowest they have been in a long time, so it should cost us much less to travel then it has in the past. I also hope to pack most of the food we will eat.  There won't be funds to go out at all.  We will have funds for gas, and that is about it.  I am open to any ideas that you guys might have for easy foods to take on the road.  I figure I can make egg salad and tuna fish for the ride, as well as pb and j.  Might take some cereal for snack.

I carefully spent the grocery money we had for the month and am keeping careful track of what we are eating to see how i can improve on our spending and menu planning.  My budget was 129.00.  I spent 131.00.  Not too bad.    To save money this week we had a free lunch at the local senior center, and participated in the bread basket giveaway at a local church.  This helps our food in the house go further.  I will also later this week be able to get WIC items because my daughter is eligible for the program until she is 5.

My daughter and I went on a small road trip yesterday to Tallahassee with Aunti L to see her daughter perform in a gymnastics event.  We were treated to lunch at Wendy's and had a very nice dinner at a place called Harry's, which is a New Orleans' themed restaurant.  That was an unexpected expense, but I drank water, and the food was really good.  Unexpected things do happen in life, and you never now where a day can take you.

I am sorry I have no photos to share, I accidentally deleted them all when I was reformatting an SD card for use.  I hope everyone had a great week.  I won't be posting anything else this week as I have some work to do with the unexpected travel and what not.  Thank you for hanging in there with me.

  1. Sorry about the sheets(&you). That's why my dogs are outside dogs. Hope daughters rash is getting better. Also you have my sympathy on the loss of loved ones. That is such a long way to travel and take kids out of school, and hubs be off work. Hope you have a safe trip. The sandwiches you listed sound good, I would just be very certain to keep tuna fish and egg salad packed in ice or ice packs during such a lengthy trip or you might have the same experience as the dog. My husband got extremely sick on too-warm egg salad as a child. Also might want to pack those two in a container and take bread separately instead of making up so bread doesn't get soggy. Just a thought.
Also if you wanted to take water in a jug you could keep it cold in the cooler and refill tumblers if each of you has a tumbler with a lid that you like drinking out of. I take my Tervis Tumbler everywhere I go. I have two that I like, they do cost a little bit, but mine were free. They were each gifts at various times, and I love them. Any insulated mug or something would work. I just thinking you wouldn't have to buy bottles water or drinks that way.

If you had time to make some muffins, that would be good for handheld breakfasts or snacks. I know it depends on your time before leaving town.

And yes you are right unexpected things happen all the time!! Some good and some not so good, we just have to roll with the punches and do the best we can. Hope it goes well for you. Drive careful and have a safe trip.

  2. I appreciate the tips Vicky. I will have to pray and see what i have that i could carry water in...i did find that my daughter has a cup with a lid...so that is one down. I may have a large jug that can hold water. You are right that would help tremendously to be able to take it and not worry about buying some. I definitely plan to be careful with the packing of the food. I know it's a long way and we have tossed around not going, but my husband feels like it is where he needs to be. It is members of his family that he was closer to then I was. I mean I knew them and spent some time with them in our marriage but not like he did. I want to be supportive, and he seems strongly to want to go. Muffins are a good idea too, i think i have some overripe bananas I got Saturday I could use those to make some.
Rolling with the punches isn't always easy as I am sure you know. I hope you are having a great week!

  3. So sorry for your loss. Emergency travel plans happen and you really do have to roll. Guess I am lucky my bottom is so round.

If you are taking a cooler, freeze an empty clean milk container with water and freeze. It will act as ice to keep the cooler cold and you can drink the water as the ice melts. Of course pbj requires no refrigeration, but I would not make them with jelly before hand. Spread the jelly afterward and then the bread will not be soggy.
Dry cereal is great for the road as are crackers and cheese and fruit. Cuties are not messy and neither are grapes. Apples can be eaten as is or sliced in the car. Carrot sticks and celery sticks are great and a little dip or dressing can be poured into small containers for individual snacks. Juice travels well also. If you make egg salad or tuna make sure to keep it well chilled and spread it on the bread right before eating.

  5. I just wanted to thank everyone for the tips, i took a little advice from each of you....i had some overripe bananas and made banana bread, will make peanut butter cookies, i have cut up some cheese slices, we have apples, cuties, pbj, bread packaged separately. I found a milk jug cleaned it and filled it with water. found cups that can travel that were already around the house. I even found some of those single drink mixes in a drawer to put in the water if we want (didn't know I had them. ) I did make egg salad and will be sure it is cared for properly. I am even taking a little milk and cereal just in case. We have a really big cooler bag that keeps things very well. I am also taking ham and cheese, my husband is worried it will go bad before we get back. I also have a couple of meals to take that i can make after we get there so we won't be an extra expense to the people we stay with. So I just wanted to thank everyone for their tips and tricks. Our nephew (just him because we have a small car) is riding with us as well and he will pay for part of the gas, and my husband found an item he was willing to part with and was able to sell it quickly so the trip will be more than paid for without us falling behind. I really couldn't have pulled everything together without the help of my wonderful readers. You really do mean alot to me. Now I have to go, I have on load of laundry left to fold, our bathroom bag left to pack, and I forgot I still have to bathe the small dog that will be traveling with us and get his food together. Later I have to drop off my friends dog to her and our little piggy. I also need to grab a bag of ice and take my daughter to dance class and shower myself. Just another day in this wonderful life :) We are leaving tomorrow morning.

  8. Vicky thank you for checking in. We did make it back safe, I have not had a chance to post yet, my daughter contacted some kind of illness and it made itself very knows the day after we got back from our trip. So I have spent my days lately catering to and comforting her. We now have an antibiotic to try and she is finally getting out of bed and getting back to normal, but boy do I have alot of work to catch up on as far as the home front is concerned. I hope to post later this weekend. Thank you again for checking in.
